Glossary

Address

Playing golf at the golf of Dolce Fregate Provence course, in Bandol, requires address. The golfer has to take its stance and place the club ahead behind the ball before playing without touching the ball. If the ball moves, the player will have a one-stroke penalty.


Aim

The aim is actually the direction the player aims at to reach its target and play its ball. On the Dolce Fregate Provence golf course, some holes are quite difficult to play because you may have to play without seeing your aim.


Air shot

The air shot is a golf term to indicate the golfer did to strike its ball. The shot is counted even if it is failed.


Albatross

Albatross is a very good golf score and means the player has played with 3 strokes under Par. Golf player can also call this score a Double Eagle.


All square

When you attend a match play golf challenge at the Dolce Fregate Provence golf course, some players sometimes win the same number of holes. In that case, the match is all square.


Alignment

A golf player still has to maintain its alignment in order to be able to correctly strike its ball. The position of the player’s body has to be aligned with the target line of tha ball.


Angle of approach

The angle of approach is the angle at which the club head is placed to correctly strike the ball. The club position actually determines the ball trajectory and its spin.


Approach shot

When the golfer has arrived just behind the green, he has to play its approach shot to land the ball on the green.


Back nine

The back nine are the last 9 holes of Fregate 18 hole golf course. When a golfer plays the back nine, it is often called “heading in”.


Backswing

The backswing is part of the golfer’s position, and represents the section of the swing starting from the ground to behind of your head, before striking your ball.


Ball

The ball is one of the main tools used by a golfer to play golf. The ball has to be struck by the club in direction to the green on a specific hole.


Ball-marker

The ball maker is used by the golfer to mark its ball, once played. The player uses it ball-marker to indicate where the ball is on the green and leaves the other golfer play his ball.


Ball-washer

The ball-washer is a golf towel used by the golf player to clean its golf balls.


Birdie

A birdie represents a hole played in one stroke under Par. The Dolce Fregate Provence golf course is a Par 72; some holes are Par 3, Par 5... If the golfer manages to put the ball in the hole Par 2 instead of Par 5, he realizes a Birdie.


Bogey

The bogey is a hole played one stroke over Par. The golfers realizes a bogey when he manages a Par 4 in 5 for example.


Bunker

A bunker is a depression filled with sand, located before the green or on the fairway. Some holes have one or sevral bunkers on the Dolce Fregate Provence Golf Course. When you shot your ball into the bunker, it is quite difficult to extract it after : you have to use a "sand wedge" club to shot it. After playing your ball, you also have to rake the bunker area to leave it as clean as it was before playing.


Cart

A cart is a golf car or buggy rented by the golf player to transport its equipment from hole to hole. The cart can electrical or gas-powered. At the Dolce Frégate Provence Golf Club, all the golf carts are electrical buggies. We strongly recommend rent a cart on Fregate 18-hole course, a very hilly course and challenging to play walking.


Club

A club represents the material to hit and play a ball on a golf course. The player usually has a club half or full series. The club can be right or left handed as well as women or man series, adapted to each golfer. The full series is composed with 14 clubs as a maximum to play a round of golf.


Clubhead

The clubhead is the main part of the club, used to hit the ball. Each club has a specific club head, according to the shit the golfer wants to play.


Clubface

The club face is a part of the club head, used to strike the ball. The golfer has to strike the ball with the centre of the club face to optimize it shot distance and accuracy. On Dolce Fregate Provence golf course, players have to pay attention to this technical point so as to win the hole.


Clubhouse

The club house is the bar or restaurant where all the golf players meet to have a drink or eat together. At the Dolce Fregate Provence golf club, la brasserie La Restanque is situated just next to the proshop and the caddy master.


Course

The golf course is the land dedicated to golf game. The golf course can be composed with 18, 9 or less holes. The Dolce Frégate Provence has two courses. Frégate course is a 18-hole course, dedicated to advanced players whereas Fregalon course is a 9-hole course designated to beginners.


Fairway

The fairway is the area between the tee box and the putting green. Once you shot your ball from the tee box, you are entering the fairway area. On the fairway area, the grass is cut even and short, to be teh most advantageous area from which to hit your ball.


Hole in One

When you play golf at the Dolce Fregate Provence Golf Club, you can be lucky and play a hole in one. This word is also known as an "ace" and means a golf player hits the ball from the tee into the cup, shooting only once. It often happens on a Par 3 hole, because it is easier on a short hoel, it is rare to see a hole in one on a Par 4 or 5 because it is too long for a golf player to reach a Par 4 or 5 hole in only on shot.


Putting green

Atfer hitting your ball from the tee box or the fairway area, you have finally arrived on the putting green. To putt means to play a stroke on a limited putting area. This stroke will be played on the putting green area with a specific club, called a putter. This putter allows you to make the ball rolling along the ground wihtout leaving the ground until the ball fall into the cup.


Teeing area

The teeing area represents the first part of evry golf course hole. Teeing area can be several on one hole, depending on the player's level. Each tee is situated at a different distance from the hole: the distance is increasing order of lenght from the hole. In that way, you will find ladies' tee, senior tee, men's tee... each tee begin at an adpated distance, according tou your index. Each tee bow has two markers, limiting the boudn of the area.


Par

Usually, golf course have Par 3, 4 and 5 holes, and a few have Par 6 holes. To understand what does a Par means, you have to refer to the following distances references, according to men or women :

Men :

  • Par 3 – 250 yards (230 m) and below
  • Par 4 – 251 to 450 yards (410 m)
  • Par 5 – 451 to 690 yards (630 m)
  • Par 6 – 691 yards (632 m) or more

Women

  • Par 3 – 210 yards (190 m) and below
  • Par 4 – 211 to 400 yards (370 m)
  • Par 5 – 401 to 575 yards (526 m)
  • Par 6 – 575 yards (526 m) or more
